Observation Visas
Foreign nationals proposing a visit to The Ohio State University should communicate with an Ohio State unit and faculty member to confirm the observation opportunity. Once the Ohio State faculty member accepts the proposal, they will work with their unit on the invitation process and/or the appropriate visa request.
If an international visitor is coming to the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, the process goes through Ohio State’s Office of Global Health.
The visa status used by a visitor for observation at Ohio State may vary by purpose and duration, which is outlined below.
J-1 Scholars
J-1 scholars may come with the intent to observe for the duration of the valid visa period (maximum 6 months or 5 years depending on J-1 category). For a unit to invite a scholar in J-1 status, the unit should submit a J-1 New Visa Request through HR Connection.
B-1 Visa
B-1 visa Temporary Business Visitors participating in business activities of a commercial or professional nature may observe for the duration of their valid visa period (maximum initial period of 6 months), though they may not be paid. Please see the OIA website for more information, in particular about honoraria or monetary remuneration, even for incidental costs.
ESTA/Visa Waiver Program
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or the Visa Waiver Program may be used by qualifying visitors for up to 90 days for observation programs similar to those on B-1 visas. Please see the OIA website for more information.
