Fingerprinting BCI/FBI Background Check
Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and/or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fingerprinting background check services are conducted by appointment only at the Ohio State Office of Human Resources (OHR), 1590 N. High Street, Suite 300, Columbus, Ohio 43201.
Fingerprinting services are available for university employment purposes, when applicable, and participants in university programs that require a BCI/FBI background check, including but not limited to Education, Nursing, Speech and Hearing, Psychology, Social Work, Work Study, Child Care and activities/programs with minor participants. Please email HR-BackgroundChecks@osu.edu to make an appointment.

Completion of the Fingerprint/WebCheck Consent form is required before the office can conduct your background check. You may complete the form prior to your arrival and bring it with you, or fill one out at the office.
Hours
Fingerprinting services at the Office of Human Resources (located at the Gateway C Building at 1590 N. High Street) are available by appointment only. Appointments must be made in advance with the Background Check Team by emailing HR‐BackgroundChecks@osu.edu. Please make sure you know the required code needed for your background check program. Codes can be obtained through your program administrator.
Costs
- BCI (Ohio): $37.70
- FBI (National): $39.70
- BCI & FBI Combined: $61.70
- Ink fingerprinting: $10 per card
OHR accepts all major credit/debit card, money order, eRequest (university offices) and personal checks. Personal checks must be in your name, otherwise the owner of the personal check will need to be present with a photo ID to authorize the transaction. The office does not accept cash.
Processing Time and Copies of Background Check Results
If you were fingerprinted at the Office of Human Resources after October 1, 2021, BCI/FBI results can be obtained as early as 1-3 business days. Fingerprints that were completed at an outside agency may take up to 30-90 days to receive results. The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation does not expedite any background checks.
To request a copy of your background check , please email HR-BackgroundChecks@osu.edu with the subject line “Request a copy of my background check.” Copies of results can only be picked up in person during fingerprinting hours with a government issued photo ID and are available within one year of the transaction date. Copies cannot be sent electronically and can only be released to the individual who was fingerprinted. We are unable to disseminate copies to any third party.

You are required to bring in any specific information your program has provided to you, whether it was an email notification or a printed handout with details. The background check office can provide guidance, when applicable, but you are responsible for knowing what is required for your academic program.

Yes, a SSN is required in order to submit your information to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for a background check. International participates who do not have a SSN must provide a passport with a current visa.
A government issued photo ID is required. BuckID is not government issued and cannot be accepted as a form of identification.
OHR does not conduct medical center background checks. Individuals obtaining a background check for the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center should contact Medical Center Security, ID Processing at ID.Processing@osumc.edu.
Yes, the office can conduct ink fingerprinting on a card that was given to you. If you do not have a card, the office can provided the service on a standard FBI FD-258 card.
Your parent or guardian is required to complete the WebCheck waiver before you can complete your background check.
