New Hires and Newly Eligible Between October 31 and December 31, 2019

Newly hired and newly eligible employees have two important enrollment opportunities: 2019 benefits and 2020 benefits. You must first make your benefit elections for 2019 before making 2020 benefit elections.

You have 31 days from your eligible appointment date to elect applicable benefits listed below. Use Employee Self Service to make these elections online.

Medical, Dental and Vision

  • Elect your medical, dental and vision coverage

Benefits Eligibility

  • Eligibility for dependents enrolled in your health plans will need to be verified. See Benefits Eligibility for more information

Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

  • Any 2019 FSA election applies only to expenses incurred from your date of eligibility through March 15, 2020, and the entire amount you pledge as a newly eligible employee will be deducted from your remaining 2019 pay

Short-Term Disability (STD)

  • No Evidence of Insurability (EOI) required

Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance (VGTLI)

  • VGTLI Employee: EOI required only for amounts greater than 3 times your pay or $500,000
  • VGTLI Spouse: EOI required only for amounts greater than $50,000
  • VGTLI Child: No EOI required

Elect Your 2020 Benefits

2019 Elections Before 2020
You must first make your benefit elections for 2019 before making 2020 benefit elections.

You may make elections for 2020 benefits after your 2019 benefit elections have been submitted and processed. Consider the following:

Medical, Dental and Vision

  • 2019 elections will roll over or you may make changes to these plans. Review the changes to the OSU Health Plan provider network that will go into effect January 1, 2020
  • Any new dependents that you enroll in your health plan coverage will need to be verified. See (link) for more information

Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

  • 2019 elections do NOT roll over. If you would like to participate in an FSA for 2020, you MUST enroll for 2020. Be aware of the new annual maximum for Health Care FSA for 2020

Short-Term Disability (STD)

  • 2019 election will roll over. If you did not enroll when newly eligible, you may enroll during this special Open Enrollment opportunity with no EOI required.
  • STD rates will change in 2020. Use this tool to calculate your cost, which is based on your base annual earnings.

Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance (VGTLI)

  • VGTLI Employee
    • 2019 elections will roll over
    • Those currently participating in VGTLI can increase their coverage by 1x or 2x their salary up to $500,000 with no EOI
    • Those with no 2019 VGTLI Employee election may elect 1x or 2x their salary up to $500,000 with no EOI
  • VGTLI Spouse
    • 2019 election will roll over
    • Current participants in VGTLI Spouse can increase their coverage by $25,000 with no EOI
    • Those with no 2019 VGTLI Spouse election may elect $25,000 of coverage with no EOI
  • Any coverage elections greater than listed above will be subject to EOI.
  • VGTLI Child(ren) – 2019 election will roll over or you may make changes to this plan with no EOI required.
  • If you and your spouse are both employed by Ohio State, you will now be able to elect both VGTLI Spouse coverage for one another. Additionally, both parents who are employed by Ohio State may insure the same child(ren) under VGTLI Child coverage.
