What began as a love for animals and a calling to teach became an impactful career for Bryan Kessler – a path that took shape at The Ohio State University, where he now helps guide future veterinary students and inspires compassion in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
With a background in farming, Bryan Kessler always knew he was meant to work with animals.
“While I was farming, Ohio State was always in the back of my mind – that if I didn’t stay in farming, it was the place I was meant to be,” Bryan said. “When deciding to shift my career from farming to veterinary medicine, I recognized that I really wanted to work with people who had unique perspectives and experiences. I was intrigued and inspired by veterinarians that not only taught students but were able to teach me new techniques and approaches as well.”
After obtaining a degree in animal science from Ohio State and working in the university’s Veterinary Anatomic Pathology Lab upon graduating, he realized his true calling lay in teaching. Now, as an anatomic pathology lab manager, he’s found his purpose – guiding veterinary students and sharing his passion every day.
Improving Safety
Upon becoming a lab manager, Bryan saw a chance to both learn and lead, which has enhanced the veterinary program experience for students. Drawing on his farming background, he introduced a modern safety program that protects students and staff while creating a stronger, more effective learning environment.
Bryan implemented a safety program in the Anatomic Pathology Lab student and resident orientation that highlights the tools they use and educates students on safety practices when working with animals.
“It’s important to educate students on how to protect themselves and those around them, and the number of accidents has drastically decreased.” Bryan said. “This improvement wouldn’t have been possible without the support from my leaders and colleagues. When I came to them with a plan, they willingly offered to support what I needed to get it started.”
Fostering Positivity and Compassion
Bryan recognizes that his specific line of work is not the most glorious. The lab handles autopsies, surgical pathology services and cremation for all Veterinary Hospitals within Ohio State’s Veterinary Medical System and the public via referring veterinarians.
“In our line of work, it’s smelly and gruesome, and at certain times we have to see things we don’t want to see,” Bryan reflected. “I try to foster compassion and be positive, while having an upbeat personality to take away the uncomfortable feeling for students.”
As part of Ohio State’s rotational curriculum, veterinary students cycle through the Anatomic Pathology Lab every two weeks. With each new cohort, Bryan leads orientations to prepare them for the hands-on learning ahead. While sometimes challenging, this rotation is a vital part of understanding animals and treating their lives with care and respect.
“I believe students should know what’s coming their way, and I try to be as upfront as possible,” Bryan said. “I encourage students to come to me immediately if they aren’t feeling their best. It makes me feel pretty good when I see past cohorts telling incoming students that they can trust me and come to me with anything.”
Building Connection and Community
Bryan’s leadership is shaped by the people around him, and he is often described as upbeat, supportive and loyal. He credits fellow residents, students and staff, as well as Ohio State’s connections, for helping him grow.
“Ohio State opens doors,” Bryan said. “If you’re willing to put in the time, try new things and meet new people, there’s always a path to achieve something.”
As a mentor and role model, Bryan champions collaboration across departments and emphasizes sharing ideas to continue building community and advancing the veterinary profession. Through these connections, he’s not only strengthened the program, but he has discovered more about the kind of impact he can make.
“At Ohio State, there’s always someone here – whether in your department or another – who is ready to offer advice and support,” Bryan said. “That’s the power of the size and outreach of the Ohio State community.”
Exemplifying Ohio State’s Shared Values
Throughout his career, Bryan has embodied Ohio State’s Shared Values —demonstrating integrity, compassion and a deep commitment to excellence. His positive leadership has inspired students, empowered colleagues and sparked meaningful change across the veterinary program.
From improving lab operations to fostering a supportive, student-centered environment, Bryan’s work continues to elevate Ohio State’s mission. His lasting impact was recognized with a 2024 Distinguished Staff Award, a testament to the difference a passionate, dedicated leader can make.
