Career Roadmap current focus on cross-unit consistency, title recommendations

When launched in 2021, Career Roadmap will introduce a job catalog, pay ranges and career path visibility for Ohio State staff. The next phase in development is working to ensure consistent position mapping across all colleges and units.

Unit level position mapping has recently been completed. During this phase, supervisors, HR partners and unit leaders reviewed how current positions were initially mapped to the new career framework. Many updates were made by colleges and offices to help increase accuracy of mapping within their units. A recorded webinar with mapping FAQs for supervisors is now available online.

Functional Alignment

The next phase of Career Roadmap development is functional alignment, which kicked off January 30, 2020, with 200 participants attending an opening session. The session included training and hands-on application.

Approximately 6-8 leaders for each job function will review consistency of assigned career levels and subfunctions across all colleges and units. HR partners and compensation team members will provide support to each work group.

Functional alignment will end in March, followed by unit leaders’ review and confirmation. Results will be shared with President’s Cabinet in spring.

Titles

As part of implementing a modern job classification system at Ohio State, titles will change for most staff in Career Roadmap. The new titles will seek to provide internal consistency and external relevance to the job market.

A titling advisory group comprised of college and business unit representatives is currently reviewing titling nomenclature and will soon make recommendations. Gail Marsh, senior vice president and chief strategy officer, is the executive sponsor. Considerations include:

  • Consistency in career levels across the institution
  • Relevance within the Ohio State community
  • Relevance within the job market

Recommendations from the advisory group, to be shared in the first quarter of 2020, will cover job classification and working titles. Updates will be reflected on the titling web page.

If you have questions about Career Roadmap, you can ask your college or unit HR partner.
