Couple's Buckeye love grows through shared experiences

This story is the first in a four-part series on the #BuckeyeLove found in the Ohio State faculty and staff community. Share your #BuckeyeLove.

Ramsey Piazza is a 16-year staff member who serves as the Assistant Director of Scholarships and Undergraduate Student Services for the College of Education and Human Ecology. Shantay Piazza, who joined Ohio State in 2005, is the Director of Communications and Marketing for the College of Veterinary Medicine.

They met when Shantay was an Ohio State student and later dated when she joined the university’s employee community. When Ramsey and Shantay Piazza first met at The Ohio State University, there was not an instant connection. “I actually didn’t like him!” Shantay recalls.

They worked together in several capacities, including student associations and orientation experiences, which is when they grew to truly understand and appreciate each other. The couple, now married seven years, developed a strong and loving relationship through their shared university experiences.

Both Ramsey and Shantay view the university as a constant source of knowledge. Ramsey is using the Tuition Assistance Benefit to pursue a doctorate in Higher Education and Student Affairs through the College of Education and Human Ecology. Shantay is considering an opportunity to utilize the university benefit to pursue a life-long passion in folklore.

“The university makes it very financially friendly to earn a degree,” Ramsey said.

The Piazzas offer the following advice to other Ohio State couples: Take full advantage of the myriad of opportunities available at the university. They stressed the importance of prioritizing health and wellness. Both have used employee benefits at the RPAC and have considered the Faculty and Staff Fitness Program.

“Your personal health affects every other area of your life,” Ramsey said.

They also appreciate the animal care resources available at the College of Veterinary Medicine. “Ohio State takes care of our entire family—two legged and four legged!” Ramsey said.

As for their favorite Buckeye memory, Shantay was quick to highlight their intimate on-campus wedding. “We eloped in the Browning Amphitheater near Mirror Lake,” she said. The location, where Ramsey and Shantay would eat lunch together when they dated, was the ideal backdrop for their ceremony. They married in December under the winter white lights that surrounded the Mirror Lake District.

“I never dreamed of a big wedding,” Shantay said. “It matched us perfectly—just the two us together in that moment. We stripped away the pomp and circumstance, which made it absolutely beautiful.”
