for leaders of employees new to Ohio State and internal transfers
Months 3-6: Speed to Performance
During this phase, the employee is shifting from learning to contributing. They have built a solid foundation of knowledge, relationships and context. Now is the time for them to put that foundation into action by taking ownership of their work, delivering results and growing their confidence and credibility.
As they begin to contribute more independently, here are ways you can support their continued growth:
- Align on Results: Make sure the employee understands what success looks like in their role. Revisit goals, clarify key deliverables and highlight upcoming opportunities for visibility and impact.
- Provide Stretch Opportunities: Encourage autonomy while identifying areas where they can take on greater ownership or lead a small initiative. These experiences help build confidence and capability.
- Deliver Candid Feedback: Use regular check-ins to offer both affirming and constructive feedback. Help them fine-tune their approach while recognizing progress and celebrating wins.
- Champion Initiative: Create space for them to share new ideas or suggest process improvements. Support thoughtful risk-taking and acknowledge follow-through and creativity.
- Check for Fit and Friction: Ask how things are going – what’s energizing, what’s challenging. Use these insights to tailor your support and adjust expectations if needed.
Months three through six are about helping the employee grow into their role with intention. They are building trust, delivering results and laying the groundwork for long-term success.
