Playtime (Jacques Tati, 1967) Friday, July 30, at 7 p.m. (Showing In-Person): Unfolding over the course of a single day in a hyperstylized modern Paris, Playtime is most known for the elaborate set that Jacques Tati had built specifically for the film. Richard Brody writes for The New Yorker that “Tativille,” as it was nicknamed, was “built on the outskirts of Paris, featured two completely functioning mini-skyscrapers…and asphalt-paved roads.” Playtime follows Monsieur Hulot (played by Tati) and Barbara (Barbara Dennek) as their winding paths almost cross while crowds of modern Parisians bustle around them in perpetual, choreographed motion. Shot in 70mm to preserve every detail of the meticulously constructed set which cost Tati a small fortune to build, Playtime marks the most ambitious film made by a filmmaker whose work influenced countless contemporary favorites like Wes Anderson and Roy Andersson. (124 mins, 35mm)
