Diversity in the Workplace

Respectful and Productive Dialogue

This course will introduce diversity concepts to leaders, to include isms and personal histories. This interactive workshop will offer strategies for dealing with difficult conversations with staff regarding diversity issues.

Effective Conflict Management, Two-Part Series

Location: 660 Ackerman Road, Room 318
This two-part series offers concepts, tools, techniques and a process for collaborative communication and effective conflict management. To realize the most effective results from the program, the expectation is that the registrants will attend both Part I and Part II.

Objectives: At the conclusion of the two-part series, participants will be able to:

· Recognize their current approach to dealing with conflict
· Identify behaviors to proactively manage conflict
· Apply tools, techniques and the process for conflict management to one's own situations

Prerequisites:
Part I - In order to participate, each registrant is required to complete and bring to the workshop the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument and Survey Questionnaire. The registrant will receive this questionnaire via their worksite mailbox at least seven days prior to the workshop.
Part II - In order to participate, each registrant is required to have attended Part I

Empathize This! Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

Location: 660 Ackerman Road, Room 318
The purpose of this session is to address the questions of "What is empathy? and
Why is it important?" A key goal of this session is for participants to identify strategies for developing empathy. Learning methods will include discussion, mini-lectures, structured activities and video.

This is the third class in the Emotional Intelligence Series.
Prerequisite: In order to participate, each registrant is required to complete Know Thy Self - Self-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence followed by Manage and Motivate Thyself.

Health & Wellness Benefit Choices Forum

You have 31 days from the effective date of your eligible appointment to enroll in health benefits. During the 31-day enrollment period, you may elect coverage in one of the several medical plans available, dental and vision coverage, dependent and health care flexible spending accounts, short-term disability, dependent group term life insurance, and voluntary group term life insurance coverage. This session will not include information on retirement choices.

The Office of Human Resources offers health benefits forums to help you make these choices. During these sessions Benefits Consultants will compare key features of the medical plans and other health benefits, and will address issues you need to consider when making your decision.

Know Thy Self

Self-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence

It is important to understand how to read our emotions and recognize the impact they have on performance. A key goal of the workshop is for participants to begin to notice their "favorite emotional hijacks", when and how they occur. In addition, participants will begin to know their inner resources, strengths and limits. Learning methods will include discussion, mini-lectures, structured activities and video. This is the first class in the Emotional Intelligence Series.

Manage and Motivate Thyself

Location: 660 Ackerman Road, Room 318
The purpose of this session is multi-fold: for participants to begin to read and manage their emotions, learn how to control their responses to new or challenging situation, as well as to learn how to motivate themselves and persist in the face of frustration. Key goals of this workshop include identifying strategies for managing themselves when "emotionally hijacked" and strategies to develop resiliency. The concepts of Self-Management and Self Motivation cover a number of competencies, including emotional self-control and developing positive outlooks. Learning methods will include discussion, mini-lecture, structured activities and video.

This is the second class in the Emotional Intelligence Series.
Prerequisite: In order to participate, each registrant is required to complete Know Thy Self - Self-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence.

Paper and Bytes: Managing OSU Records

Paper and Bytes: Policies, Best Practices, and Resources for Managing Ohio State Records
The Ohio State University, as a public institution, must comply with laws governing public records. Effective compliance can only be achieved in an environment of proper records retention and management. Participants in this workshop will become more knowledgeable about university policies, legal requirements, and best practices concerning the retention, management and disposition of records in their care. Those attending will leave with the answers to questions such as:
"Is this a record?"
"How long should I keep it?"
"Does Archives want it?"
"How do I destroy it"? and
"Where can I find more information?"

Retirement Choices Forum

You have 120 days from the effective date of your eligible appointment to choose a retirement program. During the 120-day enrollment period, you may elect to participate in the Ohio Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP), Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) for staff, or State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS) for faculty.
The Office of Human Resources offers retirement planning forums to help you make this decision. During these sessions Benefits Consultants will compare key features of the ARP and OPERS/STRS, and will address issues you need to consider when making your decision.

STRS- Preparing to Retire

Are you a faculty member who is ready to retire but have questions on the process? Representatives from State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) and the Office of Human Resources will be presenting on the retirement process and steps you need to take in order to apply for your retirement. This is a general session for all faculty. Specific retirement questions can only be answered by STRS if you call them directly to request a retirement estimation.

Sexual harassment is an issue that affects faculty, staff, and students each day. Workshop participants will review:

-Definitions and problem behaviors
-How to determine what behaviors may be harassment
-What to do when harassment occurs
