Drug Plan Covers Over-the-Counter Prilosec and Generic for $1

Did you know that the university’s prescription drug plan provides coverage for a one-month supply of over-the-counter (OTC) Prilosec® and its generic equivalent, omeprazole, for a copay of just $1? Prilosec OTC® and omeprazole OTC are available in the same strength as their prescription equivalent, which is the reason they are considered for coverage.

Several other prescription and OTC medications are commonly used to treat conditions such as indigestion, acute and chronic acid reflux, and peptic ulcers. Proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, are among these medications and have familiar names: Prilosec, Prevacid®, Protonix®, Aciphex®, and Nexium®. You may be able to switch from these prescription medications to an OTC product to take advantage of this benefit, but the decision to change is ultimately up to you and your physician. Ask him or her whether switching to Prilosec OTC or omeprazole OTC is an option. The cost of Prilosec OTC and omeprazole OTC is less expensive than a prescription PPI.

To take advantage of this benefit, you will need a prescription for Prilosec OTC or omeprazole OTC from your physician. If you purchase either OTC product without a prescription, you will be responsible for the entire cost. This benefit is currently only available through a network retail pharmacy.
