How to Handle Medical Leave Lasting More than 30 Days

If you have to be out on medical leave for more than 30 days, follow these simple steps:

  • Verify that you’ve elected short-term disability (STD) coverage.
    - STD is an employee-paid benefit available to eligible faculty and staff. It offers income replacement beginning after a 30 calendar-day elimination period when you’re unable to work due to a non-work related injury or illness. The STD benefit may decrease usage of your sick or vacation time.
    - If you’re unsure about having STD coverage or would like to discuss your options prior to going out on medical leave, contact Integrated Disability.
  • Find out if you qualify for long-term disability (LTD) benefits.
    - LTD is a university-paid benefit available to all eligible faculty and staff. It provides income replacement after a 90 calendar-day elimination period when someone is unable to work due to a non-work related injury or illness. Before you’re eligible to receive LTD benefits, you must exhaust your remaining sick leave balance.
  • Ensure that your department has all of the necessary documentation to support your leave of absence, which may include completing a university Application for Leave Form and Medical Certification Statement.
  • Maintain contact with your department while on medical leave.
