Reach 1 Program Helps Employees Earn GEDs

Image of Dan McDadeThe Reach 1 program allows employees and their family members to attend basic classes to improve reading, writing, and math skills as well as work toward a GED (equivalency diploma). Instruction is individualized and self-paced. Classes are offered twice a week for 10-week periods. Participants may enroll at any time.

GED

Dan McDade (right), a maintenance technician in Student Life, attended Reach 1 to prepare for the GED and passed the exam in September 2008. He is now enrolled in English 193 through the Bridge Program in Continuing Education.

“Going through the Reach 1 program and getting my GED was important to me because I wanted to be a role model for my four kids. I wanted to show them that anything is possible if you don’t give up,” said McDade. “Now I’m taking an English class through the Bridge program and preparing myself for college. This is all possible because of the support of my family, department, and supervisor.”
