Instructions for enrolling in OHR training in Carmen

  • Log in to Carmen
  • On your home page, click Join in the navigation bar.
  • The instructions page displays. Click on the Join link.
  • Select the desired course from the list.
  • Click Register to enroll.
  • Fill in the registration information and Submit.
  • Click Finish.

The Office of Human Resources offers several self-directed learning courses on Carmen, the university’s course management and training system. To access the training, you will need your name.# username and password. If you do not have a name.# username and password you can create them at the OSU Internet Username web site.

Instructions for enrolling in online courses are available below.

Managing Workplace Violence at Ohio State: Recognize, Respond, Report and Refer

The Ohio State University is committed to maintaining a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Workplace violence has emerged as a serious safety and health concern in today's workplace.  Ensuring a safe environment relies on having effective resources available and training in the ability to recognize, report and respond to a potential threat. This online course helps staff at Ohio State: 

  • Understand the dangers
  • Recognize the warning signs
  • Know our policies and procedures
  • Respond appropriately if violence or threat of violence occurs

Leader Series

The Leader Series will help mid-level staff leaders explore leadership issues, engage with other leaders on campus  and experience enhanced personal growth and effectiveness.    Each quarter, the program will offer workshops, webcasts, and discussion groups around leadership themes such as growing yourself as a remarkable leader (fall), relating with others (winter), building and sustaining an engaged, high performing team (spring) and leading change effectively (summer). 

Webcasts featuring world-renowned leaders, including John Maxwell, Marshall Goldsmith, and David Rock, are available on Carmen for anytime learning, 24/7 at no charge. Also, information and registration for the Leader Series workshops and discussion groups is available on this website and Carmen.

Understanding Leaves

This course will help you gain a broad understanding of the leave programs at Ohio State, including how to:

  • Recognize the different leave options at Ohio State and how they may work together
  • Utilize and implement the procedures of the leave programs to comply with policies and mandated regulations
  • Explain the leave programs and procedures to others

Performance Improvement (formerly known as Corrective Action)

The objective of this course is to identify and correct undesirable behavior of an employee and to provide the employee with due process. Managers who understand this process and how to appropriately work with an employee who has performance problems will achieve better results. In this course, participants will learn:

  • Nuts and bolts of Ohio State's corrective action policy
  • Specific processes for A&P, CCS and Bargaining Unit employees
  • How to document and communicate the performance improvement process

Sexual Harassment

At Ohio State we are deeply committed to promoting a climate of opportunity, equality, and respect. Unfortunately sexual harassment is an issue that affects faculty, staff and students every day. This online course will review:

  • The definition and examples of sexual harassment
  • How to report sexual harassment
  • Responsibilities of faculty, staff, administrators and HR professionals
  • Prohibited relationships
  • Campus resources

What Supervisors Need to Know About Discrimination

At Ohio State we are deeply committed to promoting a climate of opportunity, equality, and respect. This course will help you gain a broad understanding of the legal foundation of the Ohio State discrimination policy; as well as practical steps you as a supervisor can take to prevent and respond to discrimination.

Background Check Coordinator Training

A key component of an OHR-approved background check program is the identification of a trained Background Check Coordinator (BCC) to administer the unit's program. OHR is providing BCC training to meet this requirement of Background Check Policy 4.15.
Identified BCCs will learn:

  • How a background check program becomes approved
  • How to determine who to check and how
  • Types of background checks
  • How to assess background check information
  • Documentation and records retention
