Pre-Termination Consultation
In order to best plan your transition, you may contact an Office of Human Resources Benefit Consultant to schedule a personal appointment to go over your benefits and options after you leave the university.Voluntary Termination
Voluntary termination means that you are leaving the university by choice. On the last day of the pay period in which you terminated, you will no longer be enrolled in any university benefit programs and contributions to your retirement plan will end.Vacation and Sick Leave Payouts
Payment for vacation is made at time of termination. There is no payment for sick leave at the time of termination, however, your accumulated sick leave will remain on record for 10 years and can be transferred to other state agencies.University Medical, Dental and Vision Plans
University medical, dental, and vision plans may be continued in accordance with COBRA, which in general allows for coverage continuation for 18 months beyond the termination date at the expense of the faculty or staff member.Retirement Plan
You may roll your account balance over to an Individual Retirement Account or other qualified account, leave your balance in your current plan, or receive a refund of your balance. Each plan is different, so contact your ARP vendor, State Employees Retirement System of Ohio (STRS-OH), or Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), directly for more information regarding your options.Parking Pass
If you have purchased a parking pass, you will need to return it to Transportation and Parking Services. Until you return the permit, it will be considered active and you will be charged a fee. See the T&P policy document for Activation and Cancellation Policies and for more information.Involuntary Termination Due to Reduction in Force
Reduction in Force occurs if you are laid off, if your job is abolished, if your appointment is not renewed, if you lose your position due to a unit reorganization, or if there is a lack of funding for your position. Complete and return the Benefit Continuation Due to Reduction in Workforce Election Form to elect to continue benefits in which you are currently enrolled.Retirement Plan

An employee terminated due to reduction in work force is eligible to continue applying for university job vacancies as an internal applicant for 12 months from the effective date of termination.Unemployment Compensation
Unemployment compensation is wage replacement if you suffer a job loss. Any Ohio State employee may file for unemployment benefits. You should apply as soon as you become unemployed. Usually, individuals file during the first calendar week after losing a job. Weekly benefits are not paid retroactively (the sooner you file, the sooner you may be eligible for benefits). You may register for Unemployment by telephone with Ohio Job and Family Services. Contact Integrated Disability for assistance.Severance
The Ohio State University provides a severance program combining working notice and severance pay periods to ensure consistent economic support for eligible staff whose positions are abolished. The severance program is designed to provide financial support during a period of employment transition. See Policy 2.40, Staff Severance Program, for more information.
