Ohio State faculty and staff who are members of the Ohio organized militia or other reserve components of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, are entitled to a leave of absence without loss of pay for the time spent performing service in the uniformed services for periods of up to one month, for each calendar year. The following are factors you need to consider if you have received a call to duty. See Policy 6.35 - Military Leave/Reemployment Rights, for detailed information.
Applying for Leave
Ohio State faculty and staff reservists or National Guard members are entitled to a leave of absence without loss of pay for the time spent performing service in the uniformed services for periods of up to one month during each calendar year. To apply for leave, notify your department (within 31 days or as soon as possible), that you are called to duty and provide copies of official orders or other official documentation. Submit an Application for Leave Form. See the Continuing Benefits While on Leave booklet for more information.Pay
For those called to duty beyond one month by a Presidential or Congressional order, the university will provide a monthly pay differential, equal to the difference between the individual's current gross salary and the military pay and allowance. You or a designated representative must provide Payroll Services with a copy of your Military Leave and Earnings Statement that shows your current gross salary and allowances.Benefits
While on paid military leave, your university benefits will continue. When you have exhausted your 30 days of paid leave, you may choose whether or not you want to continue benefit coverage for the remainder of your leave. If you choose not to continue coverage, it will be terminated with the carrier, but you will be able to reinstate coverage when re-employed. Being called to duty is not a qualifying status change, therefore you may not change levels of coverage or medical plans, but you may choose whether or not you want to continue the coverage you have now. You must complete the Benefit Continuation During Military Leave Election Form regardless of whether you decide to continue coverage during the Military Leave of Absence.Medical Dental and Vision Plans
You pay the same premium that is currently deducted each pay for your medical, dental and vision coverage.Group Term Life Insurance
The university continues to pay Group Term Life Insurance premiums as if you are actively employed with the university.Voluntary Life Insurance
You pay the same premium that is currently deducted each pay for Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance, and/or Dependent Group Life Insurance. If you elect not to continue coverage while on leave, "evidence of insurability" may be an issue for resuming coverage.Long-Term Disability Insurance
The university continues to pay Long-Term Disability insurance premiums as if you are actively employed with the university.Select-Term Disability Insurance
You pay the same premium that is currently deducted each pay for Select-Term Disability insurance. If you elect not to continue coverage while on leave, "evidence of insurability" may be an issue for resuming coverage.Tuition Assistance for Benefits
Tuition Assistance for Dependents will continue as if you are actively employed with the university.Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
You will not be able to continue your contribution to a Dependent Care FSA during the leave. You may continue to contribute to a Health Care FSA on an after-tax basis during the leave.Retirement
If you are enrolled in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) or the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS-OH), you will receive credit for military time. If you are enrolled in the Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP), both the employee and the university contributions will be made on the university compensation you earn while on leave.Payment for Benefits
You can choose to pay for your benefits in one of four ways:
- payroll deduction
- lump sum prior to going on leave
- lump sum after you return from leave
- monthly billing
You will choose which option you want on the Benefit Continuation During Military Leave Election Form. Premium payments must be made by personal check or money order made payable to THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY. If you choose monthly billing, premium payments are due on the first of the month after leave begins and should include your name and Social Security number. If payment is not received, there is no insurance coverage during the leave unless you elect to pay for your benefits in a lump sum after your return from duty.
Return to Work
Upon release from military service with an honorable discharge, certificate, or other evidence showing satisfactory completion of service, you are entitled to be reinstated in your current position or one of similar seniority, status, and pay. Apply for reemployment in a timely manner upon return from leave.Students
Students who are called to active duty because of the current global situation are encouraged to follow the procedures as outlined by the Registrar.Contact Information
