Retirement

After many years of service to Ohio State and other employers, there are some things you will want to review before you retire.

Vacation and Sick Leave Payout
Payment for vacation is made at the time of retirement. If you have 10 or more years of service with the state, you will receive a payout of one-fourth of your sick time, up to a maximum of 240 hours.

Benefits

Pre-Retirement Benefit Consultation
You may also download the Retirement Handbook – Pre-Retirement Information and Resources for Ohio State Retirees for more information. To find out more about your retirement funds and benefit availability, you should consult with your ARP vendor, State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS), or Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), directly. You may also contact an Office of Human Resources Benefit Consultant to schedule an appointment to go over your life insurance options and other benefits available to you as a retiree.

Flexible Spending Account
If you contribute to a Flexible Spending Account, remember that any balance you do not use by your retirement date must be forfeited.

Tuition Assistance for Dependents
If you have completed 10 or more years of regular full-time university employment, your dependents are eligible for continued participation in Tuition Assistance for Dependents if they enroll at Ohio State within five years of your retirement date.

Programs and Services for Employees with 10 Years of Ohio State Service
If you retire with ten years of service to Ohio State, you are eligible for:

  • a BuckID
  • full use of all campus libraries
  • use of personal recreational facilities on the same basis as regular faculty/staff
  • class attendance without charge through Program 60
  • a campus parking permit (at reduced rate for staff or free for emeritus faculty)

Emeritus faculty with 10 years of service are also eligible to be listed in the Faculty and Staff Directory, to receive campus-wide news publications issued by the university, and to attend senate and other university and faculty meetings without vote. Employees with emeritus status may retain e-mail through Ohio State with departmental authorization.

Lifetime E-mail Forwarding
Staff retirees can continue to receive their Ohio State e-mail after retirement. Retirees are responsible for informing Ohio State of appropriate e-mail account information, and for keeping e-mail account information and forwarding address current by accessing www.osu.edu/email.

Parking Pass
If you have purchased a parking pass, you will need to return it to Transportation and Parking Services. Until you return the permit, it will be considered active and you will be charged fees. See the T&P web site for Activation and Cancellation Policies.

Program 60
Program 60 participants may enjoy the opportunity and experience of a classroom without the pressure of writing papers or taking exams. If you are 60 years old and have resided in Ohio for one year, you can attend courses at Ohio State on a space available basis. You will not pay tuition, nor will you receive college credit for the course.

Retirees Association (OSURA)
The Ohio State University Retirees Association (OSURA) is a community of retired faculty and staff with the goals of sharing a wide variety of activities, including educational, informational, cultural, social, travel and volunteer opportunities. OSURA also provides news about the university and monitors benefits for its members on the state and national level. OSURA will also mail you a Post-Retirement Guidebook that provides valuable information to retirees.

Retirement Dinner
Each year, faculty and staff who retire with 20 or more years of service to Ohio State are honored at a retirement reception and dinner program.

Social Security
Contact the Social Security Administration for information on retirement benefits that may be available to you if you have worked in Social Security-eligible positions.

Returning Retirees
Returning retirees are faculty and staff who have retired from The Ohio State University and are being re-hired to work at the university after retirement. If you retired under PERS or STRS, there is a two-month waiting period before you can return to work at Ohio State. Review the Returning Retirees web page for more information on eligibility requirements and guidelines or schedule a meeting with a Benefit Consultant.

Athletic Tickets
Those with 25 or more years of service to Ohio State at retirement may be eligible for faculty and staff athletic tickets. Contact the Athletic Ticket Office for more information (614) 292-2624, 1-800-GO-BUCKS, athletic.tix@osu.edu.
