COBRA (Continuation of Coverage)

Are you leaving Ohio State? Getting divorced? Has your child turned 23 and is no longer eligible for benefits? These are a few of the reasons you may need to continue your health care coverage or other benefits.

COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) is a federally mandated program that allows you to continue your medical, dental and vision benefits based on the following qualifying events:

  • termination of employment (for reasons other than gross misconduct)
  • reduction in number of hours of employment which affects benefit eligibility
  • divorce or legal separation
  • employee's death (for eligible dependents)
  • covered employee becomes eligible for Medicare
  • child ceases to be eligible for coverage under the plans

If you are unsure whether or not you are eligible for this benefit, go to Benefit Eligibility.

Are my dependents, spouse, or partner eligible for this benefit?

This benefit is available to eligible employees and their dependents. Same-sex domestic partners and sponsored dependents are eligible if enrolled in the medical, dental or vision plan. [See Dependent Eligibility Guidelines]

How/when can I sign up?

You have 60 days - from the date your coverage ends OR the date of your COBRA notification, whichever comes later - to elect coverage. If elected, your initial premium is due 45 days after the election date. Coverage and pro-rated premiums are effective back to the qualifying event date.

Will this affect my taxes?

No.

When can I change my benefit elections?

Once enrolled in COBRA continuation, you may change coverage levels during the open enrollment period or within 31 days of a qualifying status change.

Have there been any recent changes to this benefit?

No.

What would cause this benefit coverage to end?

This coverage ends when the continuation period expires, payment is not received, or the university cancels the health plan contract.

What happens to this benefit when I leave OSU?
Upon leaving the university, your 60-day enrollment window will open for electing COBRA continuation coverage.
